September 2026 will be a period of intense competition, with publishers scrambling to avoid releasing Grand Theft Auto VI at the same time.
GTA VI is scheduled for release on November 19th. While November is largely free, September will see an unprecedented number of titles competing in recent years.
Take-Two Entertainment has already linked its 2027 sales forecast to the November 19th release, suggesting this forecast is unlikely to change. For other publishers, releasing a major title at the same time as Grand Theft Auto VI is too risky, making it difficult for almost anyone to act. As a result, competition is intensifying as studios try to finalize their release schedules weeks before Rockstar Games can capture the industry’s attention for months.
A Month Nobody Wants to Share
September 2026 is currently shaping up to be one of the most crowded game release periods of the year. At least nine well-known games are going to be launched within three weeks:
- Blood of Dawnwalker – September 3rd
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword – September 4th
- Halloween: The Game – September 8th
- Marvel’s Wolverine – September 15th
- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV – September 17th
- Dune: Awakening – September 22nd
- Silent Hill: Townfall and Control Resonant – September 24th
Of course, with so many releases in September, some of these dates may still change, possibly moving to October or even forward to August. This is because publishers are trying to create some buffer time before GTA VI garners significant attention.
By November, the release schedule becomes significantly quieter. GTA VI is currently the only major blockbuster confirmed for that month, although several smaller games may still launch before it.
Some publishers have even skipped 2026 entirely.
Several other high-profile games are also scheduled for 2027. These include Sega’s crime drama Stranger Than Heaven, the new fighting game Virtua Fighter Crossroads, Bandai Namco’s Gundam Rogue Orbit, Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds expansion, Maverick Games’ debut racing game Clutch, and Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us 2. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled for Spring 2027.
Microsoft has delayed the release of Fable twice, pushing it back to 2027. Although no single reason fully explains the delay, the increasingly crowded 2026 release calendar, the company might’ve wanted to find a more suitable date. While not all delays were direct responses to Rockstar’s release date, several publishers have themselves pointed to a correlation.

Conclusion
Taken together, the current schedule suggests that GTA VI may have had a significant influence on how the second half of 2026 is being organized.
In my view, many studios appear to consider direct competition with GTA VI more dangerous than competing with several other major games in September. This may explain why September has become so crowded while November remains relatively quiet.
That does not mean every delay or release date was caused by GTA VI. However, the overall pattern indicates that studios are trying to create as much distance as possible from Rockstar Games’ launch.
Whether this strategy succeeds will depend on how players divide their time and spending across September. With nine notable games currently scheduled to launch within roughly three weeks, competition for attention is likely to be intense.
Ironically, the attempt to avoid one dominant release may have created a different problem: too many major games launching at almost the same time.
